Just something I found interesting...
Americans: Slaves to the British Government?
I came across the video above while researching for this project. It is not centered around Canadian History, but I just wanted to shine light on the opposition to the Treaty of Paris (1783).
As always, controversy will exist around documents like this. The Treaty of Paris of 1783 was written and signed under the intent of American Independence, however those intentions are most likely not 100% pure. (Let me correct myself, definitely not pure). In my personal opinion, I did not believe that Britain would hand over 13 of their colonies and allow for their sovereign growth. They were gaining enormous wealth from the countless, untouched reserves of Canada. It was also a matter of prestige, which at the time, I'm very sure, was of utmost important to Britain. According to the video, the new United States agreed to pay debts to the British government. They were already in extreme personal debt from the War of Independence, so agreeing to do such a thing does not seem practical. The agreements of the Treaty definitely had numerous undercurrents that are not usually considered. According to the video, in the War of 1812, British troops torched the White House and all other government buildings of the United States. They destroyed America's symbols of freedom and self-government. Though the Treaty of Paris did guarantee the United States new terms of independence and sovereignty, it was definitely not as simple as I condensed it into on this website. The points are really just black ink on paper - only one of those agreements have made it to today and people are still not sure if it is really upholding its value.
Anyway, I hoped you enjoyed my project! Have a great day.
